Chocolate Log

This November, I reluctantly move from my warm bed due to the cold. As you can guess winter is about to come and the outside temperature has dropped in to -5 degree celcius. Despite the cold, randomly and suddenly I was thinking to make a chocolate cake practicing for Christmas I supposed.

Chocolate log was on my mind, since I have never made it before, I saw it as a challenge and try to figure it out. it probably like swiss roll cake or probably a bit different. so here is my successful recipe for chocolate roll on my first attempt! 🙂

110g Dark chocolate, chopped
4 Eggs, separated the white and the yolk
110g Caster sugar
50g almond nuts, chopped
icing sugar

filling :
I used chocolate syrup and and nuttela for my chocolate log filling. but you can also use 200ml double cream combined with 4tbsp maple syrup – whipped double cream together with maple syrup until stiff and ready to use.

How to make:
1. Preheat the ovem to 180degree celcius/160 fan/ Gas4. grease a 33x23cm swiss roll tin and line with non-stick baking paper
2. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of shimmering water
3. whisk the egg yolk and caster sugar together for 15 minutes until think and pale. stir in the melted chocolate and almond.
4. whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold into the chocolate mixture. pour into the tin and bake for 20 minutes until risen and just firm to the touch. cover with a clean teacloth and leave to cool
5. when ready to roll, place the teacloth on the work surface, cover with a sheet of non-stick baking paper, sprinkle with sugar and then turn out the sponge onto the paper. peel off the linning.
6. spread chocolate syrup, nuttela over the cooled cake. or spread whipped cream and maple syrup over the cake. roll up from the short end. Dust with icing sugar and decorate as you wish 🙂

hope you enjoy your baking time 🙂

Hazelnut Chocolate Gateau

I have been thinking how to make dessert using less flour, since I am a bit sensitive with gluten, moreover I just want to try something different. I haven’t done a gateau before and I would like to try it, so I decided to make a Gateau using ground roasted hazelnut instead of flour, and I am pretty chuffed with how it turned out.

so here it is, first thing is we should prepare the ingredients as follow :
50g unsalted butter, melted – don’t forget extra for greasing
3 egg whites, and 3 whole eggs
150g caster sugar
150g ground roasted hazelnut
75g plain flour, sifted
icing sugar and chocolate powder for dusting

for the filling:
300ml whipping cream
25g icing sugar
2tbsp strong chocolate powder.

how to make it :

  1. preheat the oven to 200 degree celcius, fan 180 degree celcius, gas 6. grease an 18cm square cake tin and line the base with baking paper.
  2. in a large bowl, whisk the egg whites using a hand-held electric whisk until stiff, peaks form. gradually add 50g caster sugar, whisking until stiff and glossy.
  3. in a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining sugar and whole eggs until the mixture is pale and thickened. gently fold in hazelnut and flour, then stir in a heaped tablespoon of the egg whites. fold in the remaining egg whites until fully incorporated, then pour in the melted butter and fold gently to combine.
  4. spoon the mixture into prepared tin, gently levelling the top. bake for 40mins, or until risen and golden and skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes clean. cool in the tin for 5 mins, then turn out in to cooling rack to cool completely. trim the top of cake to level it, if necessary, then cut it horizontally in to 2 layers.
  5. make the filling. in large bowl, whip together the cream, icing sugar, and chocolate until the mixture holds its shape.
  6. Assemble gateau. put one cake layer onto a plate or stand. spoon over filling and spread to the egdes. top with the next layer. finish by dusting icing sugar and cocoa powder.

Good luck 🙂 and enjoy the baking day! 🙂

This weekend I want to make little sweet treat. Tired of cutting baking paper (I hate it) or preparing baking tins, so I decided making 12 cupcakes 🙂 I never make cupcakes before so I gave it a go and guess what? succeed on my first attempt! 🙂 this one is easy to make. here is the recipe :

cupcakes ingredients :
125g unsalted butter
125g granulated sugar
1tsp vanilla extract – I used Taste the difference Madagascan vanilla extract
2 eggs
125g self-self raising flour – this can be substituted with 125g plain flour by adding 2tsp baking powder in 125g plain flour
3tsp semi-skimmed milk

buttercream :
140g butter, softened
280g icing sugar
1tbsp semi-skimmed milk
few drops food coloring

how to make cupcakes:

  1. preheat the oven to 180 degree Celsius, fan 160 degree Celsius, gas 4. line a 12-hole cupcake tin with paper cases
  2. in a medium bowl, use a hand-held electric whisk to beat together the butter, sugar, and vanilla for 3-4 mins until pale and fluffy. add the eggs, one at a time, eating well after each addition. sift over half the flour and mix well to combine. pour in half the milk and mix well. repeat with the remaining flour and milk until you have smooth mixture.
  3. divide the mixture well in to the prepared paper cases.
  4. bake for 12-15 mins until the cakes spring back when lightly pressed. transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

how to make butter cream :

  1. beat the butter in a large bowl until soft. add half of the icing sugar and beat until smooth.
  2. add the remaining icing sugar and one tablespoon of the milk and beat the mixture until creamy and smooth.
  3. add few drops desire food coloring.

decorate your cupcakes with buttercream 🙂

good luck 🙂 and enjoy the fun of Baking 🙂

Victoria Sponge Cake

I don’t really like eating cakes but I love making them. I enjoy so much baking them and decorate them. I heard about classic Victoria spongecake, soft and not too sweet. the classic Victoria spongecake normally have filling inside, divided the cake in to two equal thickness then spread it with double cream. but I just can’t be bothered to divide this in to two. I just decorated this as I want to haha. this cake will take approximately 20 mins to prepare and 25 mins to cook. so here you go my recipe, I never failed using this recipe 🙂

Ingredients :
220g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
220g caster sugar
4 eggs
220g self-raising flour, sifted – if you only have plain flour add 2tsp baking powder with 220g plain flour
1tsp baking powder

for the filling (I spread the filling for decoration on top of my cake)
100ml fresh double cream
150g lime curd (you can change it with anything for the filling)
summer berries for decoration

the real Victoria sponge cake is like picture bellow :

you can put icing sugar on top of it for decorating the cake.

how to make :

  1. preheat the oven to 180 degree celcius, fan 160 degree celcius, gas 4. grease 23cm cake tin and line the base with baking paper.
  2. put the butter and sugar in large mixing bowl. beat well using a hand-help electric whisk for 2-3 mins until the mixture is light and creamy. add the eggs, one at a time, and 1tbs of the flour, beating well between each addition. fold in the remaining flour, baking powder until everything combined. put the mixture in to cake tin and bake for 25 mins, until risen, golden, and springly to the touch.
  3. leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10 mins. then turn out on to a cooling rack to cool completely, divide the cake in to two with equal thickness. note : use string to divide it, it is easier than using a knife.
  4. whip the cream until soft peak form. spread the lemon curd onto the flat side of one cake then top with whipped cream. sandwich with the other cake, then dust with icing sugar, to serve.

what I did was spread whipped cream all over my cake and decorate it with summer berries.

this cake is lovely together with afternoon tea 🙂

good luck and enjoy baking it 🙂

United in Crochet :)

18 July 2016,

It has been 7 weeks I join a volunteer organization called Kelas Belajar Oky (KBO) located at Rpatra Dharma Suci Pluit Jakarta. This park, RPATRA Dharma Suci, recently built by government and was meant to be used for kids to learn and play. It has one main building (like a tiny house) in the center, this building has a library and some learning material given by volunteer. It also has concrete space to play, dance, or doing some other activities. The park also have small space to play football.

Government also employed 3 staff to manage this place. These lovely people have planted some flowers and herbs around the park and named them on the square little board, so people will know what kind of plant they are by read the boards.

Every Sunday evening at 3pm, there will be underprivileged  kids gathered in this park, they are coming to learn something from the volunteers. They come in various ages from 5 years old until teenagers, there are also their mother coming along with them. If you have chance to meet them directly you can tell that some of them are not lucky enough to get any education, and some others are just about getting education.

The volunteers at that park are all lovely, they always organized what they want to give to children. Volunteers has their own ability and willing to give those kids something for their future. There is a young doctor, arranging something to check their health. Regular worker teaching them how to do math, to make poem, or to create anything useful. I am lucky enough to know this group.

Before I start teaching, I met the initiator of this activity, Oky, he asked what I got? I said I can do crochet, I am good with Math, I can cook, and I can Dance. I showed him all the crochet stuff I have made, and told him that this can be additional income for the family and I am more than happy to introduce the product abroad 🙂 So, he agreed, and made another class for me to teach all mother how to crochet.

I am more than grateful to be able to teach them how to crochet, will be really nice if this can turn out in to something useful for them in the future. Oky was promising me to teach down syndrome children how to crochet, but I don’t think I can make it for some reason.

I hope I can still contribute to this group when I am away. hi Readers, if you wish to be a volunteer in this Group please don’t be hesitate to contact me directly and I will pass it to Oky, he will more than happy getting any help from everyone, any help is counted 🙂

Crochet Addict

I don’t clearly remember when the first time I love doing crochet. when I was little, my mum used to crochet stuff for me to wear, she was really good at it. It fascinated me how she turned all those yarns in to blanket, socks, or any other stuff.

I asked my mum to teach me how to crochet, she taught me how to make crochet base first, called a chain. First attempt to make a chain I was frustrated! I couldn’t even hold my hook properly, how do I supposed to make that chain? for days I tried to make a “proper” chain, well didn’t end very well. I almost give up with this thing until my mum told me “it is called hook pen, so you should hold this like you hold your pen. try to straighten your yarn with other hand so it will be easier for you to hook your yarn.” Ok, why not, I will try my best to make a chain. Here you go, 7 hours and 27 minutes practicing and I finally did my first proper chain! hahahaha. For the next step I learnt all different basic patterns for crochet. I must say once you master it, crochet will be the fun thing to do in your spare time.

My first crochet stuff was a little sling bag. I made this for my classmate in my junior high school, and she sew me a pajamas with bear pattern all over. I begun addicted to crochet since my first bag. There is an expression for a “crocheter” –if I can’t take my yarn, I am not going– yes, I have been travelling with my yarns and hook in my bag (believe it or not). I have to admit when I stuck in the Jakarta traffic or I have to wait for my flight yarn is practically save my life!

I, personally, am an impatient person, I am pretty much can’t wait how my crochet will turn out in to. It always painful for the beginning, first chain done and I will think, oh gosh when will it finish? but when it starts to show it’s pattern I get so excited. I understand that crochet require extra patient and the result will make you feel like “hell yeah I did this!” and you will feel so proud about your self (well at least that’s what I feel).

There are loads of crochet pattern books sold in bookstores and they have lovely patterns we can try. I noticed that when we master it, we are no longer need books, we can just make up our own pattern. I feel tremendous joy in doing crochet and it is stress release. I feel even more proud when people love my crochet stuff and start ordering crochet stuff from me for their beloved children 🙂

Do you Tango?

3rd May 2016,

One lovely evening, I was having conversation with my bestfriend at my apartment. I had so much pressure at work due to organisation changes, work political manuver, and of course, toxic work environment. I cant believe I work in such a place, well there is up and down, this is just temporary, soon will be paradise to work at haha! anyway, we discussed about something not important as usual, we both wanted to do something, like joining community outside the office. We have activities at home so far, we love crocheting, cooking, writing stories, and reading books, but this time we want (I want more) to do something else. It was like a God sign or something (exaggerating), I saw a Latin dancing class for beginner community on the internet, well as you can guess “I am in”. my friend doesn’t want to go so I had to go on my own.

Wednesday, 11th May, my first time joining a Latin dance. so here we go, we are on the Tango class now. For your information, I did several dances like Ballet (oh that was when I was 5), modern dance, and Indonesian traditional dance. First step in to Tango I felt lost, seriously, Tango is different and it is not as easy as we have seen on youtube video!

Guess what I learnt from my first 2 week? WALKING! haha ya, in Tango we require to be able to walk properly, knowing our standing leg and also our free leg. This will make us easier to move, as simple as transferring our weight from one to another standing leg (of course if we can master this “walking properly” term).

I have been tremendously enjoying this class to be honest. I didn’t want to miss any single Tango class. My Tango instructor always feeding us with loads of useful knowledge and information about Tango. I couldn’t remember all he said but something amazed me about Tango and it was making me enjoying Tango even more, yeah “the history of Tango”. This one as well making me thinking about putting Buenos Aires Argentine on my travel list haha (list done – only a list).

The first question on my mind was “why Tango music sounds so desperate? sad? not like salsa, fun and cheerful?”. The instructor told us Tango was originally come from “a slave”. ages ago in Argentine there wasn’t many entertainment, so a slave created the Tango dance, that is why the Tango music sounds so pathetic because it is describe the slave condition herself (I dont know her or him btw), so sad, desperate, want to escape. Despite all of those, I think there is a beauty on it’s depression.

After Tango became popular, initially performed by 2 men (not man and woman). Then years later Tango was open for woman, and the first woman Tango performance was a prostitute. I listened to that and think to my self oohh Ok, (Oh Sh*t so I have to act like a prostitute or something?) hahaha. Anyway, this information gave me the feel of dancing Tango, even I am not that good at dancing yet, but I know the beauty of it.

Tango is a stress release for me, when I dance I can forget about any problem in my bloody daily activities. I have learned all it’s techniques and terms ( well my knowledge still little btw). my favorite move is “ocho” and “Hiro”. “ocho” is eight in Spanish, it’s like you draw 8 on the floor, very simple and graceful. “hiro” is more likely doing round move involving a bit “ocho” (well I dont know if this is the correct definition or not) Hiro is a bit spinning for me but I kind of love this, it is really fun 😀

27th June was my last Tango class before holiday, and will start again in second weeks of July and I always looking forward for my Tango class.

A journey as a solo traveler

It has been a long time I didn’t write anything on my personal blog. As an undergraduate student I was exciting to write everything down on my personal blog, literally everything until you confused what kind of blog do I have hahaha.

I am entering a working life since I graduated from my engineering school in 2013. my job has consumed all my life and energy, so I didn’t really have time to write anything here (it is not an excuse BTW :P)

My desire writing my Blog again came after I found my personal Diary from my wardrobe, I read those stories I wrote when I did my traveling journey by my self. I found the stories quite interesting so I would like to write them down here, apologize if it is not an interesting content for you. Apologize if this writing is poorly edited or poorly written in English.

It has started from my journey as a solo traveler (or partially solo).

24 December 2011,

Alright then, I finally decided to go Bali after long journey for my brain think about how am I going to spend my Christmas this year. well, this is not just about spending my holiday in Bali, but also I got spam from my Dutch friend (we later can call him Richard) saying “Hi Please come to Bali, I feel so insecure traveling by my self, my friend (let’s say his name Nickys – he loves this name for no reason)suddenly left me for a date in Surabaya” (oh hold on I am going to laugh first HAHAHAHA), OK I am going to Bali!

I was on the night train when Richard phoned me saying he wanted to be a clini clown, being happy and funny. I thought that was hilarious. He sometimes can’t make up his own mind about loads of things, he wanted to be happy, that was why he flew thousands miles away to Indonesia to get temporarily rid of his problems and see how things work in other side of the world. He said good night and will wait for me for breakfast and lunch tomorrow.

Here we go, I arrived in Denpasar Bali at 13.30pm after bloody long bus journey, and it is obviously late!!! oh well, Richard texted me about the hotel name and the receptionist should let me in. “Hi, please wait for Nickys, I am going to meet my friend, meet me tomorrow together with Nickys at Goa Gajah Ubud”. Ok, this is my first solo journey and I wasn’t scared instead I was excited.

Forget about taxi! I am now under student budget, a little adventure would do! I took Ojeg – a motorbike taxi – all the way from bus terminal to Kuta beach where the hotel is. there was an interesting story about this Ojeg journey I would like to share 🙂 the journey was lovely, beaches view everywhere you see, Bali is such a paradise ( loads of blogs talking about how beautiful Bali is, so I would skip talking about this I supposed 😛 )

On the way to the Hotel the Ojeg driver starting to make simple conversation with me. I tried to memorize all the conversation and translate it in to English. The conversation was:

O : “Are you married?”
Me : “No, not yet, I am not interested having a boyfriend at the moment”
O : “is this your first time going to Bali?”
Me : “I have been to Bali before yes, this is my fifth times visiting Bali.”
O : “You look so young and well educated, how old are you?”
Me : “22”
O: “Have you ever make love to someone before?”
Me : “(attempted to say NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!) no not yet, pretty much busy with my engineering books”
O :”Oh Really? I don’t believe that, because before I got married I have done that with my girlfriend, now is my wife, I am a bit surprised hearing you haven’t done that.”
Me :”Oh, well it depends on what you believe it is right thing to do isn’t it? I may just not finding the right person to be with I supposed.”
O :”you Javanesse Miss?”
Me : “Yes”
O:”Ay Miss, there are so many marriage contract happening in Bali, mostly between Javanesse and foreigners”

Before we go further in to the remaining conversation, let me explain briefly what does “marriage contract” mean. In Indonesia, especially muslim, most of people don’t do sex before they got married, it is religious thing about sins and God. in order to be able to have sex with those Indonesian women, men will be required to married them first, temporarily (contract), let’s say a month, a year, couples weeks.

Me :”Right, and why should they have a marriage contract if they just can find someone on the street?”
O :”Ay Miss, men who already have kids would prefer marriage contract, so she can look after their kids too.”
Me :”Oh, I see, so why do you tell me this if I may ask?”
O: “I have some foreigners that would love to have you as their “date” if you interested in of course.”
Me :”Ay, how much will I get paid?”
O: “it depends Miss, you can discuss directly to them how much you would like to get paid”
Me :” Ay Ay thank you.”
O :”let me know if you interested in Miss, here is my number.”
Me : “Thank you”

The conversation ended once I arrived my hotel destination with that Ojeg driver number on hand. I didn’t know what to do with this number, not interested in but curious to know about the other dark world of this country.

I always want to know more about this kind of case but I was too scared to start. I hope someday I can get involved a bit and discover something that I haven’t discovered. as a woman, I would love to be able to help them if I have given the opportunity.

I was too tired to think, it’s Christmas eve, I am going to the Kuta beach on my own 🙂

SGOT: Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, an enzyme that is normally present in liver and heart cells. SGOT is released into blood when the liver or heart is damaged. The blood SGOT levels are thus elevated with liver damage (for example, from viral hepatitis) or with an insult to the heart (for example, from a heart attack). Some medications can also raise SGOT levels. SGOT is also called aspartate aminotransferase (AST).

SGPT: Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, an enzyme that is normally present in liver and heart cells. SGPT is released into blood when the liver or heart are damaged. The blood SGPT levels are thus elevated with liver damage (for example, from viral hepatitis) or with an insult to the heart (for example, from a heart attack). Some medications can also raise SGPT levels. Also called alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
